SERVICE Mechanical Testing
THE PROCESS OF TESTING MATERIALS AT A SPECIFIED TEMPERATURE, TO DETERMINE ITS SUITABILITY FOR ITS INTENDED APPLICATION.
The tests are carried out by measuring properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, hardness and impact resistance. Mechanical testing also includes the bend testing of welds.
The Innovatest Falcon 500 Vickers hardness tester uses the latest available software which meets ASTM, EN and ISO specification requirements

TENSILE TESTING
(DESTRUCTIVE TEST)
A method of determining the behaviour of materials subjected to axial loading. Yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, elongation and reduction in area are the most commonly reported values.
We are registered with the ASTM Interlaboratory Proficiency Testing Program for Tensile Testing. Tensile testing is included in IMPLABS ISO 17025 scope of accreditation.

- Tensile tests are used to determine the maximum load a material can carry under tension. The test piece is pulled in an axial direction until it breaks, with the exact load recorded as the process is carried out. The yield, ultimate tensile strength, elongation, and reduction in area can all be accurately determined using these methods.
- Our on-site workshop is able to cut and machine the tensiles to the required testing specification.
- Tensile tests are carried out in accordance with internal procedures, which are based on international specifications. These include:
- ASTM E8/E8M
- ASTM A370
- ISO/SANS 6892
IMPACT TESTING
(DESTRUCTIVE TEST)
- Impact tests measure the toughness / ductility / brittleness of a material by measuring the amount of energy absorbed (measured in Joules) to break a test specimen of standard dimensions. Our pendulum type impact testers are capable of testing at temperatures ranging from -196°C to 200°C and from 0 Joules to 280 Joules (80% of 300 Joules as per International Specification).
- All our impact tests are the Charpy V-notch type ranging in sizes from 10mm x 2.5mm to 10mm x10mm, but our equipment is also able to test other standard impact designs on request. Our on-site workshop is able to cut and machine the impact specimens to the standard testing dimensions.
- All of our impact testers comply with requirements as set out by British, American, ISO and SANS specifications.
- Impact Testing is part of IMPLABS ISO 17025 scope of accreditation.
HARDNESS TESTING
- IMPLabs has Vickers, Rockwell, Equotip and Brinell Hardness testers and is capable of testing ferrous and non ferrous metals with very low and very high hardness values.
- We comply with the requirements as set out by ASTM E10, ASTM A384, ISO 6506-1 and ISO 6507.
- Hardness Testing (excluding Equotip) is part of IMPLABS ISO 17025 scope of accreditation.
WELD PROCEDURES
IMPLABS adheres to the testing requirements of weld procedure qualifications and welder / operator qualifications in accordance with the latest versions of ASME IX, AWS D1.1 etc, API 1104, and ISO 15614.
BEND TESTING
IMPLABS can perform bend testing of welds in plates and pipes. Bend testing is carried out in accordance with our internal procedures, which are based on the ASME IX-QW160 and AWS D1.1-5.8.3.3 international welding specifications.
IMPLABS can also perform bend testing on a variety of ferrous and non ferrous materials over and above those tests required for welding procedures.
